Book Order (Completed!)

Its finished!!! I spent the whole morning compiling the list and sent it to Mrs. M

Very excited! Went over the original budget, but Mrs. M told me before I compiled the list that if I did it was ok! She said that she really had no idea how much to allot me. We are working of creating a graphic novel section. There are 74 books total, with 36 being Graphic Novel / Manga and 38being Fiction / Non-Fiction. Im pretty proud of this list cause I had a lot of help. Two of the library aides, L and M, helped with the Manda and Science Fiction, and Mrs. D, the long-term sub, helped with the fiction.

So here it is! :)

MARC Records

So Mrs. M was giving me a brief tutorial on how we add new materials to the collection. Here is kinda how it went down.

Me: MARC records are scary....
Mrs. M: Yes yes they are...

The overall process of adding materials to the collection is pretty simple. Destiny (the database for school media centers) allows you to simply enter in the ISBN number and it pulls up the record. From there you can edit, like add subject headings or change the call number.

Why would you change the call number? Mrs. M explained that sometimes the call number will be 697.563, but in the case of a small setting sometimes 697.5 will work just fine. Also, she added that they made the decision to group certain subjects together to help the students. Say a student is writing on F. Scott Fitzgerald, she made the decision to group all books about Fitzgerald's writing together. In a school setting, where students are mostly writing term papers, this groups everything nicely together. At first, I didn't quite understand this, but once I had a class of 25 students, who all needed materials on Fitzgerald, it was beyond helpful to have them all in one place.

If a book is not in Destiny yet, Mrs. M, said that sometimes she will wait a week or two to see if someone adds it (if it is a new material) or she has a list of 5 databases that she uses (I remember one was from Florida) and based on their MARC records of this particular item, she creates a new one within Destiny.

Used Books

So I was talking with Ms. M, who is head of the school media center I intern at, when I mentioned that I sent a fellow graduate some books for his school media center (Hi Benji!). I told her that I go these books from my library's Friends Bookstore and they were in great condition. She told me the next time I was down there to grab some books for the school! I thought this was a great resource for anyone who is working with a budget (or in our case, no budget). Think about it, these books are already wrapped and pretty much stellar condition, so why not pay .25 cents for a book that normally would cost $15 to $20?

I was browsing the collection today when I found some materials that had been discarded from another local public library. There was nothing wrong with these books. This library might have had multiple copies or this particular book wasn't circulating within this community.

I thought it was pretty awesome that they are so open to receiving materials, even if it is used. The main point is to get the material in the kids hands! Can't wait to bring her and the kids some new books.

Book Order (Round 2)

So I intended to keep this blog updated regularly, but I work 2 jobs, plus my internship, so saying I am a little busy is an understatement.

With my apolgoy out of the way, onward I go.

There has been so much I want to blog about, from cataloging to just general pocedures. But I think the most important thing on my plate right now is the book order. I need to have this finished and submitted by mid-feb. My budget is between $500 to $750. I originally made a list, just off the top of my head, but I did not realize what a task this is!

I walked with Ms. M about developing the graphic novel collection and she totally agreed with me. I know a lot of people don't understand the usefullness of graphic novels, but I am a firm believer that they help kids get more into reading. I love graphic novels and I'm trying to broaden my knowledge of them. That said, I know ABSOLUTELY nothing about Manga. Nada. Zip. Zero. Luckily, one of the library aides, L, was beyond helpful today. Anyways, Ms. M and I discussed possible areas for a graphic novel / manga section, along with spine label ideas (or even whether or not to have a graphic novel label). I have readjusted my book order to included some awesome manga and graphic novel possibities.

Problem? These series have LOTS of volumes. Whats a good number of volumes to get a kid hooked? I mean there is one series that is in the 400s! seriously? I decided that maybe 3 to 5 volumes is a good number (except for Gaiman's Sandman series. Must have all.)

Also, I was browsing in 2nd & Charles (ie heaven) today and found most of these manga series for half off the price that Amazon and B&N has listed. I am thinking of mentioning this to Ms. M to see what she thinks about buying the mangas here.

Ok, so I know that you are patiently waiting for my book order, but this is just the 2nd round. I am going to start on budgeting soon so there might be some cuts. Also, please note that if you see I have volumes 1-4 then 6-7, don't think I forgot about the 5th volume. It just means we already own in and I'm filling in the gaps.

Also, not sure if I have mentioned this, but my internship rocks. just thought I would brag a little. :)

Ok, book order!

Book Order (Beginning)

So like I mentioned earlier, for my long term assignment I was given a book budget ($500 - $750) to order books with!

This is extremely important because my choices will permanently be part of this collection. There are several parts that I need to look for when searching for new books:

1. I need to check the system to make sure a particular book that I wanted wasn't already part of the collection. I know this seems like a "duh" moment, but it is very important when working with a limited budget. If I accidentally order another copy of Billy Bob's Book on Bookworms, when we already have one that is potentially $20 wasted.

2. If I wanted to order a sequel or another part of a series (which I do) I need to ensure that the originally copy is circulating.

3. Look to see what areas need improving or developing

4. Ask professional opinions of other colleagues to see what is becoming popular and what they might recommend.

Ok, as I looked over this library I noticed there wasn't a graphic novel section. I asked Mrs. M about it and she said that they did have a few but they were shelved in the regular fiction collection. She mentioned that she would like to shelve them separately because she believed and I agreed that they would circulate more if the students could spot them easily.

I have compiled a short list so far of the books that I would like to add to my book order. Here is what I have as of right now:

- The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Robert A. Heinlein (I have never heard of this book or author, but M the library Aid specifically asked me to order this because he is said it was awesome.)

- The Sandman Volumes 2-8 by Neil Gaiman (This is where checking the circulation of books is important because we have volume 1, but not the rest. Luckily it has good enough circulation that merits ordering the rest of the series)

- Georgia Nicolson Series by Louise Rennison - This series is one of 10. Now I wasn't orgingally planning on ordering all ten, but I am still debating. My library has books #2 and #8 in the series, which kind of surprise me. I am thinking that I should order books 1, 3-7, and 9-10. This series is a personal favorite of mine!

- Luna by Julie Anne Peters

- Radiant Darkness by Emily Whitman

- How To Take The Ex Out Of Ex-Boyfriend by Janette Rallison

- The DUFF (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) by Kody Keplinger - I recently read this debut novel by 18 yr old Keplinger and loved it! I talked with Mrs. M about what is acceptable material for a public school because the story centers about a girl who develops a friends with benefits relationship with a hot guy at her school. I didn't know if the storyline of teens opening having sex would be a suitable addition to the collection. Mrs. M said that even though we belonged to a conservative community, nothing had ever been challenged in her 20 years there. I really enjoyed the conversation we had about challenged books and controversial materials.

- Dirty Little Secrets by C.J. Omololu

- World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks (recommended by Mollie and the sales guy at 2nd & Charles)

- Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay (Laurie recommended this book to me a while ago and though its on my to be read (tbr) list, I thought it would be a nice addition.

- The Odyssey by Gareth Hinds (Graphic Novel)

- Beowulf by Gareth Hinds (Graphic Novel)

- King Lear by Gareth Hinds (Graphic Novel)

- Rot and Ruin by Jonathan Maberry (Heard amazing things about this one, though I haven't had the opportunity to start it myself. )

- Sh*t My Dad Says by Justin Halpern

- Shattering Glass by Gail Giles (Cause who doesn't love a good bullying story?)

- Maze Runner by James Dashner

- The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger

- Ship Breaker by Paolo Bacigalupi (Um, Printz award?)

- Stolen: A Letter To My Captor by Lucy Christopher (Loved!)

- The Last Summer of the Death Warriors by Francisco X. Stork

Some of these books might get cut to make room for others. Not all of these books are YA, some are adult, but this HS's collection is made up of a mixture of both. Like I said, this is all I have right now. I intend to consult some people on graphic novels, but I am a fan of Gareth Hinds, so I added 3 of his works. Remember, if you are thinking why did I add Popular Book #1 or Popular Book #132, I had to cross reference with out existing collection. If you have ANY suggestions, please let me know!!! :)

About....

So I started this particular blog to help me keep up with my new internship at a High School Media Center, along with my regular jobs. I figured I would post anything interesting or particularly helpful that anyone might benefit from or just find useful.

My first day at the internship was Friday. I originally meant to post this then, right when everything was fresh, but I had to go to my other job and then I worked all yesterday. But alas, here it is now!

The reasoning behind me choosing a school media internship is pretty simple. I wanted to garner as much experience as possible. I already have experience in a Public Library (Children's), so I didn't need an internship there. I thought School Media would be the best setting to try out. I am not doing a School Media Internship, but an internship in a school media setting. Difference? School Media Internships require 300 hours split between a high school and elementary setting. Guess who doesn't have 300 hours? This girl! So I opted for the traditional internship of 150 hours a semester. Since I am not on the School Media track, I will not have my certification, but I'll deal with that later....

On Friday I spent the day getting use to things and seeing how it all worked. My high school was not a traditional one at all (It was an Art School), so I am a little out of my element here. The idea of detention and hall passes are kinda throwing me for a loop.

In my internship there are two Librarians and an Assistant. One of the librarians retired during the middle of the school year so there is a long term sub, Mrs. D, who is very lovely! Since she is also a little new, she was very helpful in explaining the ropes to me.

The main librarian, Mrs. M, has been so helpful and I have only been there one day. She is very open and wants me to learn as much as possible! I have had internships in the past where I do absolutely nothing. So I am beyond excited about this one! She has even given me a long term assignment! A Book Order!!! For a school that has had a book budget of $0 for the last two years, Mrs. M has given me some of the grant money that she was awarded this year to allow me to make my contribution to the collection! I am beyond excited about this and I am thinking very seriously about what areas to develop!

I will post more later about everything! :)
