If it hadn't been required reading in high school I probably wouldn't have either. That being said, it is pretty good and will hopefully find its way to your tbr pile. :-)
Don't be ashamed - like Morgan said, most people are assigned to read it in high school. However, I didn't really get how amazing it was until I re-read it in my Adolescent and Children's Lit class in undergrad. It is one of my favorite books of all time -- whenever you get the chance to read it, you definitely should!
