About INSPIRE:

Kalliope lives with one purpose.

To inspire.

As an immortal muse, she doesn’t have any other choice. It’s part of how she was made. Musicians, artists, actors—they use her to advance their art, and she uses them to survive. She moves from one artist to the next, never staying long enough to get attached. But all she wants is a different life— a normal one. She’s spent thousands of years living lie after lie, and now she’s ready for something real.

Sweet, sexy, and steady, Wilder Bell feels more real than anything else in her long existence. And most importantly… he’s not an artist. He doesn’t want her for her ability. But she can’t turn off the way she influences people, not even to save a man she might love. Because in small doses, she can help make something beautiful, but her ability has just as much capacity to destroy as it does to create. The longer she stays, the more obsessed Wilder will become. It’s happened before, and it never turns out well for the mortal.

Her presence may inspire genius.

But it breeds madness, too.

Inspire Teaser 3

Excerpt:

I can feel Wilder’s breath against my lips. More than that, I can see it. The sun has set and the temperature has dropped, and air fogs between us. There’s something about actually seeing it, like our lips are touching, we are touching, despite the distance between. And as we sway from side to side, my heart gradually begins to pick up speed.

The strains of guitar music flowing out from the restaurant are nearly indecipherable over the heavy heartbeat in my ears. But Wilder must hear it. His hands are strong on my body, guiding my movements, and I’m practically clay in his palms.

We dance, eyes on eyes, lips nearly on lips, and there is lightning beneath my skin each time his body brushes against mine in a new way. His touch is firm, but gentle, never pushing or pressuring, though I can tell from the dark look in his eyes that he’s just as affected as I am. The music shifts, building to a crescendo, and he spins us. My chest pushes tight against his, and I bite back a gasp. I don’t know if it’s the cold or him or some combination of both, but the tips of my breasts are painfully tight. Just the pressure of my bra is enough to rub them raw.

I remember the night at his apartment, the way he’d taken his time learning my body. I think of the heat of his mouth on my skin, and the memory alone is enough to make me shiver and clench.

He’s back to being business, grown-up Wilder tonight in his button down and glasses. Only now that I know him, it doesn’t seem like such a stark difference. He is neither the straight-laced man nor the tattooed bad boy. Or perhaps he’s both. Regardless of what he’s wearing, Wilder is caring and loyal and strong and so sexy that I’m having trouble remembering why I shouldn’t push him into the backseat of his SUV and crawl on top of him.

Spotlight: Just a Little Crush

Just a Little Crush
By: Renita Pizzitola
Releasing October 21st, 2014
Loveswept

Good girls stay away from Ryder Briggs . . . or, at least, they try to. In Renita Pizzitola’s emotional novel of heartache and seduction, one college freshman just can’t get enough.

Brinley Dawson doesn’t drink, she studies—and despite the accusations of her alcoholic mother, she’s still a virgin. But if Brinley’s life is so put together, why is she freaking out to be going to college with the gorgeous, green-eyed jerk she kissed on a stupid dare in high school? Ryder Briggs can have any girl he wants . . . and the rumors say that he does. So why, after publicly embarrassing Brinley four years ago, is he suddenly acting like he’s interested?

Ryder never forgot Brinley. In fact, those perfect seven minutes permanently raised the bar for what a kiss could be. The truth is, Ryder doesn’t dare get too close to anyone. He knows how that worked out for his parents. But when his roommate takes a shot at Brinley, Ryder can’t contain his jealousy. Now he must do the hardest thing he’s ever done: forget about sex and convince Brinley his feelings are real.

Brinley isn’t sure whether she believes Ryder, but for the first time, her body isn’t playing by the rules. Then she discovers that she’s an unwilling part of a cruel game, humiliating her all over again—and Ryder might be to blame. Has Brinley’s little crush turned into a huge mistake . . . or has she found the one guy worth trusting with her heart?

Renita Pizzitola is the author of New Adult contemporary romance and Young Adult fantasy. When not writing, she can be found feeding her caramel macchiato addiction and reading just about anything she can get her hands on. She lives in Austin, Texas, with her husband and two children.

Recap: My September YA/NA Challenge

My goal for September was to read ALL the YA/NA novels…well maybe not ALL, but a huge chunk. That's why I started my September YA/NA Challenge.

If you read my Project Read All The Books: September Recap you’ll know that the month of September kicked my butt. I was out a town a good deal and felt mucky pretty much for the whole month. I went to the Dr. on Friday and she did some blood work. Though I don’t know the results yet, she was confident that a month long round of B12 shots, plus some other lifestyle changes would have me fit as a fiddle in no time. …which means THEN I can read ALL the books. ;)

Though I didn’t get make as much progress on my YA/NA Challenge as I would have liked, I did read some good books. I ended up factoring in some middle grade into the challenge as well.

This challenge was suppose to be only for the month of September. I started it to counter my Summer-filled months of romance. I found that I really enjoyed getting back into reading YA after 3 straight months of smut.

What are some new Middle Grade/ YA/ NA books that you have recently read?

Here is a recap of what I read in September….

Middle Grade:
Counting by 7’s by Holly Goldberg Sloan – 4 Stars
Sisters by Raina Telgemeier – 3 Stars
Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson – 4 Stars

Young Adult:
The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkoski – 5 Stars
Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins – 4 Stars
We Were Liars by E. Lockhart – 4.5 Stars
Legend by Marie Lu – 4 Stars

New Adult:
Finding It by Cora Carmack – 4 Stars
One More Chance by Abbi Glines – 1 Star

Breathe, Annie, Breathe by Miranda Kenneally Review

In Breathe, Annie, Breathe by Miranda Kenneally, we are introduced to Annie, a recent High School graduate who is training for her first marathon. But she isn’t running for herself. She is running for her boyfriend…who died before he could compete in the marathon. As Annie completes her training, she not only has to deal with the repercussions of pushing her body to the limit, but the death of Kyle. Will Annie be able to successfully complete a 26 mile marathon? Will it help her say goodbye to Kyle?

I checked out Breathe, Annie, Breathe because a friend and fellow librarian gave it rave reviews via Goodreads. First off, I feel that I need to state that I’m not a runner. I’m not in to running and I never plan to enter a marathon. I would probably only run if someone was chasing me, but then I would only have to be as fast of someone else who was with me.  I didn’t know if I would be able to relate to Annie. What do I know about running? I have NO desire to run. Would I enjoy a book that was centered around marathon training? Kenneally holds nothing back about the brutality of training for a marathon. She covers the vomiting, the blisters, and even the constant trips to the bathroom. All that aside, I have such a profound respect for runners now. I’m so glad she covered the grotesqueness of the training process. It made it real and it made you root for Annie that much more.

Another subject that Kenneally doesn’t shy away from is the fact that these characters, like most normal teens, are sexually active. I am a big supporter of sex in YA novels, as long as it is real and relatable to the story. In Breathe, Annie, Breathe the characters are sexually active and there is no shame in that. Annie does have a scene where she is laced with guilt but not because she is sexually active. It deals more with her moving on from Kyle, her deceased boyfriend. Her guilt from being sexually attracted to another guy is logical and worked for where Annie was in her life.  Kenneally did a wonderful job of working this into the story. She did not use graphic details but the addition of sex and sexual innuendos was completely natural for the characters.

I found myself instantly relating to Annie. Not about the dead boyfriend part or the training for a marathon, but how she was dealing with all of this on top of trying to get ready for college. It brought back nostalgic feelings of buying dorm decorations and finally moving in. I was reliving it all with Annie. Besides having those nostalgic feelings, all the characters in Breathe, Annie, Breathe were real and played an important role in the story. My hands down favorite character is Jeremiah, the brother of Annie’s trainer. Annie knows this hot adrenaline junkie is bad news, but she can’t help herself from slowly opening up to him. It was patient and lovely.  As Annie’s story progresses, she learned more about herself than anything. Yes, there is a romance, but this story is about a young woman’s struggle to let go of the past and learn to be happy.

I highly recommend Breathe, Annie, Breathe and I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. Reading Breathe, Annie, Breathe was part of my YA/NA September Challenge. Though this novel is more likely to be grouped in the Young Adult section, I personally think that is has more of a New Adult feel.

September YA/NA Challenge

If you regularly follow this blog, you are aware that every Summer I only read romance novels. My Summer of Smut. It helps me cope with the chaos that is Summer Reading.

Inspired by my Summer of Smut, I have decided to take a different approach for September. I have decided to dedicate the month of September to Young Adult/New Adult novels. I will predominantly focus on YA novels. Romance is my favorite genre, but YA is a close contender.

Since I have 2 whole months (sometimes 3 if things are truly hectic) dedicated to my favorite genre, I figured YA needed a little attention as well. I have also included New Adult (NA) in the challenge, because they are closely associated.

As you can see below I went a little hold happy. This does not include the 15 books that are on hold for me.

I’m really excited to start this challenge and I will report at the end of the month on what books I tackled. So far I have finished one and am currently reading two.

Breathe, Annie, Breathe by Miranda Kenneally – Read (amazing!)

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart – currently reading for Forever YA Book Club
The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkoski - currently reading

@Jeaniene_Frost Giveaway! Win an ARC of Beautiful Ashes

If you follow this blog then you know that I'm a big fan of Jeaniene Frost, who writes sizzling paranormal romances. I'm very excited to be giving away her new book, Beautiful Ashes. This one is a little different than her normal work, because it is her first venture into New Adult. I'm very excited about the first installment in the Broken Destiny series.

In a world of shadows, anything is possible. Except escaping your fate.

Ever since she was a child, Ivy has been gripped by visions of strange realms just beyond her own. But when her sister goes missing, Ivy discovers the truth is far worse—her hallucinations are real, and her sister is trapped in a parallel realm. And the one person who believes her is the dangerously attractive guy who's bound by an ancient legacy to betray her.

Adrian might have turned his back on those who raised him, but that doesn't mean he can change his fate…no matter how strong a pull he feels toward Ivy. Together they search for the powerful relic that can save her sister, but Adrian knows what Ivy doesn't: that every step brings Ivy closer to the truth about her own destiny, and a war that could doom the world. Sooner or later, it will be Ivy on one side and Adrian on the other. And nothing but ashes in between…

Eeek! Beautiful Ashes is set to be released on August 26th, so I'm making this a short giveaway. There are plenty of ways to enter and you can enter multiple times per day. Good luck!

Until We Fly by Courtney Cole

Displaying UWF RDL Banner.jpg

Displaying UNTIL WE FLY, front cover, large.jpgEx-Army Ranger, Brand Killien, has always been good.  A good friend, a good soldier, a good everything. . The problem is, good hasn’t gotten him anything but a crushed heart. So after licking his wounds, he decides to move on.  And moving on doesn’t include being good anymore. Bad sounds so much better.  Jaded and detached, Brand is determined to never open himself up to anyone again.  It’s not worth the pain.  Instead, he becomes closed, hardened, aloof.  But then he’s called back home for a family emergency… a family that he is estranged from.  A family that he put out of his mind a long time ago for very good reasons…reasons that involve secrets and pain.  Reasons he tried hard to forget.    But home is where the heart is, and it just might be where Brand finds his again.  Why?  Because home is where Nora Greene is.  A fiery, red-headed spitfire, Nora is a thing from his past.  A beautiful, feisty thing.  When Brand left, she was away at boarding school.   But she’s back now. And she wants Brand, scars and all.

And don’t miss the other Beautifully Broken, now available:

The Wasteland by Emily Sims

Displaying Wasteland_Tour_Banner.jpg

Displaying The Wasteland.JPGIn another world, one far removed in time and space altogether, a timeless journey awaits. The path is steep, the road is long, and it encompasses a wild evil. Here, in a place entirely different from our own, we discover the lost remains of a once vast empire and a love story long forgotten.

In The Wasteland, set against a barren landscape, we find a terrified woman named Lylah. She races along the overgrown highways of a war-torn country, pursued by a deadly enemy. Try as she might, Lylah remembers nothing about her past or who she is. Without quite meaning to, she stumbles upon a sinister forest and a small tribe of people. They have dark skin and hair. They speak in thick accents. Nothing about them is familiar, but at least they’re safe.

As she struggles to unlock the keys to her past, Lylah falls deeply in love with this primitive way of life…a way of life she’s never known before. The tribe’s leader is a fearless man they call “Matteo.” He is formidable and abrasive, but Lylah is inexplicably drawn to him.

In spite of uncertainty, one thing remains: an evil force governs this rugged land. The Opposition uses its power to oppress the tribes-people and they are quickly closing in on Lylah. Will she summon the courage to face her past in time? Somehow, Lylah’s memories hold secrets that could destroy the Opposition and break its tyrannical power.

In this beautifully written young adult novel you are introduced to Lylah, who has no memory of who she is and the world that she is living in. Sims does a wonderful job of creating a world that has conflict and passion. You can't help but root for Lylah. I thought Sims has an elegant style of writing...almost poetic. The Wasteland is very much worth your time!

EXCERPT

“His hair glittered silver just like his ice blue eyes. They shone like
magic in the campfire’s light. His voice was deep and full of the
mysteries of a past life. He weaved ancient stories together with
the ease of someone who’d been crafting them his whole life long.
He was one who noticed me. His piercing eyes ran straight
through my soul and he would chuckle as if he was amused with
what he’d found there. I’d never known why he loved me so much,
I was just grateful that he did.

For someone such as me, the child who lived in my sister’s
shadow, attention from such a powerful man was intoxicating.
It would’ve been easy for me to worship my grandfather (who
I affectionately labeled “Great-dad”), but for the fact that he was
so completely enamored with the Mighty. He simply breathed
out his adoration for our Creator, so much so that I was swept
up in a fascination for the Mighty as well. To Great-dad, his
relationship with the Mighty was synonymous with life itself.
On nights when I was utterly alone, I would whisper words
into the sky and feel a clear response to my soul. It was during
these formative moments that I fell in love with the Mighty too,
just as my grandfather had.

“These trees used to be so alive, Delylah.” Great-dad motioned
to the canopy above our heads. “Just like every other living thing
on earth. They breathed in and out just like we do. I still miss
them. I still find myself wishing they would wake up.”
He sighed and his eyes glittered.

“Tell me again about what happened, Great-dad. I want to
know why the trees fell asleep.” I scooted up under his powerful
right arm. There was nothing in all the world that could’ve hurt
me then.”  (page 21, The Wasteland)

All Lined Up by Cora Carmack Review

If you have read this blog before then you know that we are big fans of Cora Carmack around here! She has a lovely talent for creating characters that are real and dear to our hearts. In her new novel, All Lined Up, she introduces us to Dallas and Carson. They seem to fit together perfectly, but can they put all the outside forces aside to be together?

In Texas, two things are cherished above all else—football and gossip. My life has always been ruled by both.

Dallas Cole loathes football. That's what happens when you spend your whole childhood coming in second to a sport. College is her time to step out of the bleachers, and put the playing field (and the players) in her past.
But life doesn't always go as planned. As if going to the same college as her football star ex wasn’t bad enough, her father, a Texas high school coaching phenom, has decided to make the jump to college ball… as the new head coach at Rusk University. Dallas finds herself in the shadows of her father and football all over again.
Carson McClain is determined to go from second-string quarterback to the starting line-up. He needs the scholarship and the future that football provides. But when a beautiful redhead literally falls into his life, his focus is more than tested. It's obliterated.Dallas doesn't know Carson is on the team.
Carson doesn't know that Dallas is his new coach's daughter. And neither of them know how to walk away from the attraction they feel

Sounds awesome right? Well it is! I couldn't wait to get my hands on the ARC of All Lined Up! I finished it in one sitting and I must say---Carson is pretty much perfect! Dallas is great as well, but there was something just so loveable about Carson. Carmack did a wonderful job with all their characters, but she broke the mold with Carson.

I'm a big fan of Carmack's because the level of angst in her stories is low and her characters have wit and true feelings. If you haven't read any of Cora Carmack's work then you are missing out! I would start with All Lined Up or Losing It, which was her first novel.

All Lined Up by @CoraCarmack Release Day Launch

Displaying ALU RDL Banner Final.jpg

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Cora Carmack follows up her trio of hits—Losing It, Faking It, and Finding It—with this thrilling first novel in an explosive series bursting with the Texas flavor, edge, and steamy romance of Friday Night Lights.

It's obliterated.

Dallas doesn't know Carson is on the team. Carson doesn't know that Dallas is his new coach's daughter.

And neither of them know how to walk away from the attraction they feel.

Excerpt:
There’s only one thing in the world I despise more than football, and he’s making his way down the stairs toward me.
My eyes flit around me like I’m scanning a battlefield instead of a blowout:fraternity banners, litter of red Solo cups, and a freshman pledge dragging around a trash bag playing reluctant maid. Part of me wants to keep doing that, to pretend like I didn’t hear him. But I can’t. If I ignore him, it will only prove to him that he still bothers me.
I face him as he steps off the last stair, crossing his arms over his broad chest and grinning at me. Levi. My ex.
He leans his hip against the banister of the grand staircase, and I spy not one but two girls  sitting halfway up the stairs, obviously upset that they’ve lost his attention.
Behind me I hear someone shout, “Ready. Aim. Fire!” and I know the beer guns are back in play.
“Alcohol and bad decisions, Levi? Can’t say I’m surprised to find you smack-dab in the   middle of that.”
He kicks off from the banister, swaggering a few steps closer. His dark hair and eyes are as striking as always. I’d fallen for him so hard my freshman year of high school: doodling our names together in my spiral, watching him play from the bleachers, wearing that monstrous mum he gave me for homecoming, beaming on his elbow at his junior prom.
The memory of all that just makes me nauseated now. But as Stella always says, hindsight is a pretentious, know-it-all bitch.
“You come here to make some bad decisions?” He moves closer, his voice pitching lower. Intimate. His gaze drifts down my body with an arrogant familiarity. “Because you know I can help you with that.”
Levi Abrams has been the cause of enough bad decisions for a lifetime.
Stella steps in, her voice colder than I’ve ever heard it. “I’m fairly certain she’d rather       sandpaper her own skin off.”
I nod and plaster on the fakest smile in my arsenal. “And then take a bath in lemon juice.”
Levi smiles back, and I’m pretty sure the bastard is enjoying this.
He’s bigger than when I last saw him. Bulked up. I guess that’s the difference between high school and college ball. But it’s not just muscles… he reaches out a hand like he’s going to touch my hair, and as I jerk back, even his hands seem bigger than I remember. A man’s hands, rather than those of the boy I knew. Or maybe his head got so big that his inflated ego overflowed to other parts of his body. Also a possibility.
I knew Levi was here when I chose Rusk University—hard not to when he’s the starting   quarterback—but I didn’t think I’d ever have to see him. Since Dad wouldn’t let me leave Texas, and only a handful of universities here actually have a true dance major, Rusk was the best option out of the schools to which I was allowed to apply.
Levi lets his hand fall away and turns to leave, but then stops to say over his shoulder, “You don’t have to pretend to hate me so much, you know. I’m here. You’re here. We could start fresh, D.”
Why does no one get that it’s impossible to have a fresh start when nothing has really changed? God, I knew that better than anybody because no matter how many new coaching jobs Dad took, every school ended up the same.
Levi is still a douche-bag who only cares about himself.
Dad still approaches parenting like I’m a member of his team.
And I… I’m still stuck. In my father’s shadow. In Texas. In this lame state school with a joke of a dance program.
And now I’m stuck at my first frat party with the ex who broke my heart.
Yay college.
