52 Reasons to Hate My Father by Jessica Brody

Lexington Larrabee has everything. Fabulous clothes, an expensive car, a mansion, a jet at her disposal and a check for $25 million dollars waiting for her….that is until her dad spoils everything. After causing one too many scandals Lexi’s father decides she has to earn her inheritance… all $25 million. Now she must complete 52 weeks of 52 dead end minimum wage jobs before she can cash in on her fortune. Now add in the fact that her father has stuck her with a babysitter, granted a very cute babysitter who is quite ripped, and Lexi’s world pretty much sucks. But there is more to meets the eye with this rich girl. Underneath her fabulous lifestyle, Lexi’s lives in a world without love. Will her 52 jobs be able to solve her problems or will Lexi be drawn back into her old life of scandal?
52 Reasons To Hate My Father is a great summer novel. I was looking for something light that I could read in one sitting. This was just what I was looking for. We have all seen the socialites scattered on the tabloids, but in Jessica Brody’s new novel she adds a certain twist to the out of control rich girl that we usually see. I would have liked to see Brody go deeper into the jobs and expo some hard truths about minimum  wage jobs today. I’m not saying go full on Barbara Ehrenreich, but a little more exposure on the plight of middle and lower classes would have been refreshing. Still, I loved this book. If I laugh out loud while reading any book, then I know I have found a winner. 52 Reasons to Hate My Father will keep you entertained and smiling as Lexi struggles to adjust to her new lifestyle.

Checked out you say? I don't believe you!

A patron came up to the Circ Desk looking for a particular movie. After a quick search I informed her that our copy was currently checked-out. I placed a hold on another branch's copy and sent her on her way...or so I thought. She kept lingering at the desk and glancing back to the DVDs....

Me: Um... can I help you with something else?

Patron: Are you sure it's not over there?

Me: It is currently checked out, ma'am.

Patron: Oh I know, you said that, but is there any chance it might be over there? *points to DVD area*

Me: No ma'am. It is checked out.

Patron: So no chance it is over there? At all?

Me: No.

Patron: Are you sure? Maybe it is on one of those carts? *points to recently returned movies cart in the lobby*

Me: Ma'am it is not in this building.

Bacon? Dental Floss? Condoms? Oh my....

Last week I posted a photo of a bag of rubber band braces that a patron used a bookmark. This sparked an idea so I ran with it. I asked the question, via Twitter, what was the strangest thing you have found patrons to use for bookmarks? I got tons of responses but I couldn't believe the two most popular items! But first, here are some of the hilarious responses....

A lobster bib

$5 bill that said "do not lose"

Unopened fentanyl patch

Toilet Paper

An empty bag of sunflower seeds labeled "bookmark"

Divorce documents

A worm (little girl saw her mother put a flower between the pages of a book and wanted to try....)

Cheese

So what were the two most popular responses?

Bacon (cooked and uncooked) and condoms (used and unused).... extremely disgusting.

One librarian wrote that when the patron was asked about the uncooked bacon inside the book, their response was "I couldn't find anything else." There are some cases where dog-earring is acceptable.

In regards to the condoms, a friend who works at a college library, found the used condom. I even saw the picture, but I decided not to post it here. You are welcome.

So what is the strangest thing you have ever found?

1 + 2 + 2 = Not 5

A patron came to the Circ Desk complaining that he wasn't notified about an item that was on hold. I pulled up his record and looked at the hold call history.

Me: Well it says that you were called on Friday for 5 items.

Patron: No, I got a call telling me that I had 1 book, 2 CDS, and 2 DVDs ready to be picked up.

Me:...That equals 5.
