Review: Changing Constantinou's Game by Jennifer Hayward

About a year ago I discovered Jennifer Hayward, a new Harlequin Presents author. I received The Divorce Party via Ney Galley and fell in love! I couldn’t wait to read more by her and we have been keeping in touch as she writes more for Harlequin.  You can also check out the interview I did with her last year.

She graciously sent me a new copy of her 4th book, ChangingConstantinou's Game , 2 months before it was released. It arrived and it was perfect timing because I was laid up in the house with a cold. I tore through Changing Constantinou's Game and immediately found that all the points of why I loved The Divorce Party were in Changing Constantinou's Game.

The story starts out with Izzie, a budding journalist who is determined to track down Alexios Constantinou. Too bad she doesn’t realize the man she is tracking down for a story is the same one who is keeping her from succumbing to her fear of elevators as they are stranded for hours. After their elevator ordeal Alex and Izzie spend one night, without regrets, with each other. But is one night ever enough? What happens when they realizes exactly who each other is?

There are many reasons why I love Hayward’s writing, but the best is probably the amount of emotions and scenes she can pack into Harlequin’s standard 189 pages. I said it from the beginning and I will say it again, Hayward could easily turn her stories into full on novels.

Another bonus for me is the fact that the characters deviate from the typical Harlequin couple. Alex is not a bully – yes, he is a little stubborn and quick to jump to conclusions, but he isn’t the typical alpha dominating male that is so typically seen in HP (Harlequin Presents). Izzie is different because she has a backbone and she knows what she wants. Together these two characters come together and fall beautifully in love. Yes, there are some difficult obstacles, but they overcome them like a true couple would.

Changing Constantinou's Game will be out in September so be sure to get your hands on it before it flies off the shelves!

Jennifer Hayward Interview

9780373131891     A few months ago I requested a ARC of  The Divorce Party by Jennifer Hayward from NetGalley. Most of you know my love of Harlequin Presents, but if you don't know, let me tell you how much I love them! Though they are short (usually 180 or so pages) I find myself absolutely addicted to them. They are my brain candy and guilty pleasure all rolled into. Anyway, let me get back on track. I was approved for The Divorce Party and I tore through it. Usually I can read a HP and move right on, but I was struck with the magnitude of emotions that were in The Divorce Party. I knew right off the bat that The Divorce Party was definitely above the grade.

I did some research on Jennifer Hayward and found that not only was this her debut novel, but she was the winner of So You Think You Can Write, an online Harlequin writing contest. How cool is that? Here is a little more about Jennifer (kindly provided by the author herself!):  Jennifer penned her first romance at nineteen. When it was rejected, she bristled at her mother’s suggestion that she needed more life experience. She went on to complete a journalism degree and intern as a sports broadcaster before settling into a career in public relations. Years of working alongside powerful, charismatic CEOs and traveling the world provided perfect fodder for the arrogant alpha males she loves to write, and free research on the some of the world’s most glamorous locales.

A suitable amount of life experience under her belt, she sat down and conjured up the sexiest, most delicious Italian wine magnate she could imagine, had him make his biggest mistake and gave him a wife on the run. That story, The Divorce Party, won her Harlequin’s 2012 So You Think You Can Write contest and a book contract. Turns out, Mother knew best. The second book of Jennifer's De Campo trilogy, An Exquisite Challenge, will be published with Harlequin Presents in Feb 2014 and the third instalment in May 2014 with The Truth about De Campo.

I read The Divorce Party back in July and even after all this time the story is still with me. I own very very very few HP (it is less than 5) because I have only loved a few of them. I definitely own The Divorce Party. I decided to ask Jennifer is she would subject herself to one of my zany author interviews. She immediately responded! I am still awestruck with how the powers of social media can connect us with our favorite authors! Without further ado, her is my interview with Jennifer Hayward!

Silly Author Interview Questions for Jennifer Hayward
(Because these are way more fun than regular questions)

1. What song always gets stuck in your head?
It’s always different depending on what I’ve been listening to… I always go on a power walk after I finish writing for the day… tonight it’s Rihanna’s ‘Stay’. Such a beautiful song.

2. Left Handed or Right Handed?
Right J Although I know a lot of Rhodes Scholars are left handed…

3. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
The winter in Barbados because I just love the beach and the island that much and the winter in Canada is ugh. Sunset on the beach with a cocktail in your hand, dreaming up juicy stories, who can beat that? Summer at home in Canada cause it’s an amazing country I’m proud to be from.

4. Which book have you read over and over again?
Pride and Prejudice – why wouldn’t you?

5. What is the worst job you have ever had?
Working at a hotel reception desk. They thought I was far too friendly rather than efficient. Go figure!

6. What was the last movie you went to see?
Superman Man of Steel with my two boys. LOVED it. The opening is so magical and dramatic.

7. Favorite alcoholic beverage? I’m a huge wine fan, but someone served me the most delicious gin and tonic the other night with just a hint of lime. Yumm.

8. If I gave you a kitten, what would you name it?
Ooh. I’m really a dog person. But kittens are pretty cute. Jake if it was a boy and something fun like Esmerelda if it was a female…

9. One food you refuse to eat?
Liver. Ugh.

10. Did The Divorce Party have an alternate title?

Funny enough it never did. I popped it in there on a rough draft, used it when I entered the book into Harlequin’s So You Think You Can Write Contest and when I won the contest with it, Harlequin kept it. Cue happy face J I can’t imagine it called anything else.

A BIG THANK YOU TO JENNIFER HAYWARD

Read All The Books: Week 3

As of the last count…

Number of books TBR (that I own): 89

I really need to stay out of the thrift store…but it is less than a mile from my house and I have an addiction to teapots, so I need to go there! And while I’m there I usually look at the books. I’m sorry, but I can find brand new, great quality books for as low as .39 cents. How could I pass them up? How could YOU pass them up?

Anyways, while I was browsing for books I found 3 books that I wanted to purchase. I found 2 reprinted Diana Palmer books, Diamond Girl and Rogue Stallion. I’m a huge Diana Palmer addict, though her work is always hit or miss with me. The 3rd book I found was Smile by Raina Telgemeier, a middle grade graphic novel. I have seen this floating around and I really enjoyed Drama, so I thought for less than a dollar it would be a good buy.

That brings the total back to 92. This isn’t good.

I did a crazy amount of reading this week though. Over the weekend I finished up 6 books just by Sunday morning. Here is what I read this week:

Smile by Raina Telgemeier
Wishes by Jude Deveraux
The Billionaire’s Captive Bride by Emma Darcy
Silver Borne (Mercy Thompson #5) by Patricia Briggs
Be with Me by Maya Banks
Robot Dreams by Sara Varon
Days of Our Lives Better Living by Greg Meng
Stranger in my Arms by Lisa Kleypas
A Lady of the West by Linda Howard (currently reading)

I’m very happy with what I read this week because I read a lot of great books(and only one terrible one - Days of Our Lives Better Living)!

3 of the books came from my TBR bookcase (Smile, Wishes, and A Lady of the West). That brings the total down to 89, which brings me right to where I was last week. *Sigh*

Current Total: 89

Oh, look at the teapot I found at the thrift store this week!

Summer of Smutty Reads: Harlequin Present

In the last post I admitted my guilt pleasure of reading Johanna Lindsey novels. Since my summers are known as “Summer of Smutty Reads” (where I usually indulge myself in trashy romance novels...how else do you suggest I survive Summer Reading?), I have decided to admit another guilt pleasure: Harlequin Presents.

If you have never read them, don’t worry there is a pretty basic format. Super rich billionaire (or some foreign equally rich prince) who has either lost his wife, girlfriend, fiance  or perspective female in one way or another. In whatever way he has lost her, it has caused him to despise her and he is usually seeking her out for revenge or divorce. Throw in a pregnancy or a baby or some deep dark family secrets. And don’t forget to throw in a few bullying/blackmail scenes where our “hero” is forcing the female character to bend to him. Usually this is added because the female character is scared that the super rich hero will take away their child that she has mysterious kept hidden or will refuse to grant her a divorce. You get the idea?

Gosh, after writing that I am beginning to question why I read this stuff. Oh, yeah…because they are addicting and pure brain candy. I can read a Harlequin Presents novel by reading maybe a paragraph each page. So why do that? I like the simplicity of the stories. You know what you are going to get. Yes, they are very cookie cutter, but sometimes that predictability is nice when you just want to turn off you brain.

Though I am confessing this love of Harlequin Presents to you doesn’t mean I am ready to start placing HP on hold at my local library. Remember, I work in a library? Ah, the ridicule and teasing. No thank you. Nor do I want to pay $3.59 at Walmart. Buying them used is too much trouble. So how do I get my grubby hands on them? Netgalley.

If you have an e-reader and haven’t heard of Netgalley, shame on you! It is a great site that solely deals in e-book ARC (Advance Reader Copy). I can usually get 5 or 6 HP at a time and that will tie me over for a few months. In exchange for the ARC I will give an honest review. Normally, I write a couple of sentences because that is usually the extent of a HP. No long in depth reviews because HP aren’t really that deep in my opinion. I still love them though.

I will usually give 3 to 4 stars on Goodreads for a HP. 5 stars for a HP is very rare. Like Halley’s Comet rare. I have easily read hundreds of HP and I can count on one hand the number I have given 5 stars too.

That being said, I wanted to mention a HP that I recently acquired from Netgalley, Princess in the Iron Mask by Victoria Parker. This is Ms. Parker’s debut novel. Here is a summary of the book from Goodreads:

A princess in hiding
Dispatched by the king to retrieve his headstrong, errant daughter, Lucas Garcia thought this was just another day at the office. That's before he meets Princess Claudine Verbault, who's adamant that returning to the kingdom that banished her as a child is never going to happen.

A barely concealed attraction!

Hidden from the spotlight, the now-independent Claudia has learned the art of being the anti-perfect princess. But Lucas does not look like the kind of man to accept insubordination! If only she could bargain with this frustratingly immovable man and give him something to distract him from his duty.

While the summary is a little bland, I decided to give this a try. I was extremely surprised to find myself drawn in by the characters of Claudia and Lucas. Their dialog and chemistry are a perfect combination to keep you invested in the story. Ms. Parker was able to do what a lot of HP writers can’t do. In 185 pages, she had you fully invested in these characters. I really wish she would have focused more on Claudia’s family and their back story. There is a big rift between Claudia and her family and it was a golden opportunity to take this HP one step further. There was actually a lot of potential for this story to be drawn out. In fact I could easily see Princess in the Iron Mask as being a full fledged contemporary romance novel. Kudos to Victoria Parker for creating a unique set of characters and for constructing a HP novel that goes above and beyond the standard.

SIDENOTE: Are the covers absolutely terrible? Terribly awesome that is. I love cookie cutter covers. I just don't know where to start when making fun of them. Don't get my started on Amish Romance covers.....
